St Savin, also known as Saint-Savin sur Gartempe, is situated approximately 45km east of Poitiers. It is the home of a Romanesque Abbey Church, the construction of which began in the mid 11th century. The Abbey contains many beautiful 11th- and 12th-century murals which are still in a remarkable state of preservation. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
